Holiday Gift Giving: Treating your Staff

exploding-presentA real holiday gift is not linked to performance. If you choose to give out presents to staff, fairness and equal treatment is critical. Your only criteria for value should be the amount of hours worked. You may want to consider three preset gift items (gift cards of different values are always a good bet):

  • one for full time employees
  • one for regular part-timers
  • one for occasional staff

Just about everyone loves a good party, so if you have the financial means, invite staff out for dinner with their partners over the course of the holidays. If you’re working with a tighter budget, stick to a staff-only party, hold it early in January (you may be able to negotiate a better price), pay for the meal and the first round of drinks, and then have staff pay for any additional alcohol if they so desire. If money is even tighter, hold the party at your home and make it very personal.
